[ Return to College List ]
Aurora College began 40 years ago as a heavy
equipment operator program based in Fort Smith. In
1968, teacher education was added, and the school was
renamed the Adult Vocational Training Centre. Over
the next two decades, the college changed rapidly as the
Northwest Territories evolved from a jurisdiction run
from Ottawa to a self-governing territory with its own
unique cultural and educational needs.
Business management, natural resources technology,
social work and nursing were added to its roster
of programs over the years, and a full range of preemployment
trades and apprenticeships training were
offered as well.
Today, Aurora College offers a wide range of certificate
and diploma programs, and conducts all trades and
apprenticeship training in the Northwest Territories.
The college also offers full- and part-time courses on
many different general interest subjects, and recently
added degree programming in nursing and teaching.
Aurora College has also recently added two degree programs:
the bachelor of education degree and the bachelor
in the science of nursing degree. These are offered
in partnership with the University of Saskatchewan and
the University of Victoria, respectively.
